In 2005 Jal used 42 Boeing 747-400 and 2 Boeing 747-400F(reighter). They also used 3 Boeing 747-100, 15 Boeing 747-200, 11 Boeing 747-300. Since 1984, Japan Airlines has been the largest Boeing 747 operator in the world.

In 2003 Jal used (owned and leased) a fleet of 42 Boeing 747-400 and 39 older Boeing 747's. In 2003 they also used 20 Boeing 777 and 28 Boeing 767. And 15 DC-10 and 6 MD-11. Of the Airbus company they only used 36 airplanes the A300 family. Of the smaller sized airplanes they used 23 Boeing 737-400 and 42 airplanes of the MD-90 and MD-80 family.
